WACIT Europe: Emotional literacy in a multi-cultural Athens school

Almost 80% of the children in this primary school are not native Greek, who live in a pretty deprived inner-city area. And yet, you would not notice when you entered the playground. Somehow they seemed to gel into a pretty coherent community: whole-school ethos at its very best! Not surprisingly, there is an inspiring Headmistress and a really dedicated teacher group behind all this – one tends to meet motivated and special people in the most adverse circumstances.

These external hardships were easily obvious when I had the chance to even briefly meet some of the children. Their drawings and verbal communication shared another narrative about their families and life experiences. So, it was refreshing to witness how much the 7-year-olds remembered from their emotional literacy group with the ERGO NGO volunteers last year. Several layers of resilience and nurturing had been laid from entry  point at this amazing multi-cultural school in Athens.
