There are 2,000 school health centres in the US, and 60 in the state of Illinois, of which 30 in Chicago. Following Sally around to two high school health centres in deprived Chicago communities, I had the impression of a well integrated and comprehensive model.
The words ‘seamless’ and ‘flexible’ were mentioned several times, and were central in engaging disaffected pupils, particularly pregnant teenagers. Building trust and being responsive appeared key to offering reproductive health, breastfeeding, asthma or mental health advice, among others. This was a clearly young person-centred and holistic approach. So refreshing to see frontline academic presence by Niranjan Karnik and his team, and investment by Rush University.
