WACIT Africa 1: Engagement with community leads and elders in Kenyan slum

Looking back, it was a master stroke by the FANET NGO in Nakuru to engage the community leads 18 months ago at the launch and training workshop. This was a tough test and I had my doubts: could I relate to them, in training terms and personally? Somehow it has worked and the bond holds well during the third visit.

The elders’ strength in bringing up young children, often in the absence of parents, is extraordinary. So are their pride and realistic expectations from external agencies. In that respect, it was also instrumental to work closely with the local government and their representative – or ‘chief’ as I call him!
